East West Homes managing director Peter Healy on what to look for when choosing a house-and-land combination. 

Q: What should prospective homeowners be looking for when choosing a house for a corner block?

A: The shape of the block will determine the type of house you can build. Often people will fall in love with a house design and try to make it fi t the block, but choosing the land fi rst will always give a better outcome. Having selected a corner block, there is an opportunity to choose the best position for the garage, as well as the best orientation for northern light and private open space. These factors will strongly infl uence the siting of the house, and any reputable builder or sales consultant should be able to advise the new homeowner of designs that can suit their needs. Another design feature of a corner block house is that it allows sidestreet access for a tradesman’s vehicle, boat or caravan – or an extra garage or workshop…
